Wood Introduction
Lumber Selection
  • All wooden swingsets/playsets are made of solid lumber China Fir (also known as Chinese Cedar), whose species name is “Cunninghamia Lanceolata”.
  • The China Fir is a kind of soft wood with beautiful grain, flagrant and naturally decay & pest free.
  • These are widely used in building wooden residential play equipments, with its economical and structural consideration.
  • The trunk will be milled into required rectangular profiled boards and then cut to different lengths.

Treatment
  • The cut wood boards will be kiln dried to achieve a moisture under 18%, to avoid the splits during to rapid loss of water.
  • The kilns are built and maintained as per requirement with FSC.
  • Kiln drying certificates are required to be submitted to Customs & Quarantine before entering Australia. This is to certify the wood products had been pre-treated to prevent import of pests.

Splits and Cracks
  • Splits and cracks will occur in timber as it expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes. They will occur particularly in the round pole timbers, but also in square cut timber and they are in new sets as well as old. If wood which has a similar moisture content to the natural surrounding is used, cracking is greatly reduced.
  • Whilst these can appear quite large and alarming, these cracks DO NOT affect the strength, integrity and durability of the play equipment. What you need to worry about is trapping kids little fingers in there. Anything over 10mm is considered dangerous for children and should be looked at.
Prevention
  • Applying preservative can greatly help on preventing cracks and splits. Once it is applied they can then treat all exposed areas. However, this means that the outside of the wood has a high moisture content. If this can be allowed to dry out slowly in more controlled conditions, often taking up to three months, the end result will be a greatly reduced incidence of cracking.
Product Maintenance
Regular Inspection

Your play equipment should be inspected on a regular basis. Check all nuts and bolts twice monthly during the usage season for tightness. Tighten as required. It is particularly important to check & tighten bolts at the beginning of each season.

Check swings, chains, and slides for cracks or deterioration. Replacement should be made at first sign of deterioration.

Staining and Sealing

It is also important to stain and seal the wood components of your play system as needed.

This will not only keep your play set looking nice, but it will also prolong the life of the system by limiting moisture and UV rays that the wood is naturally exposed to.

It is recommended that you use a high quality stain/sealant. We recommend our own water based acrylic sealant that is specifically designed for the cedar lumber used on our swing sets, but any reputable paint store will be able to recommend a suitable product for your play system.

If any of the following conditions are noted, they should be removed, corrected or repaired immediately to prevent injuries:
1. Hardware that is loose or worn, or that has protrusions or projections;
2. Scattered debris, litter, rocks, or tree roots within the play area;
3. Rust and chipped paint on metal components.
4. Splinters, structural wood imperfections, or decayed wood components;
5. Missing or damaged equipment and or components, such as hardware, handholds, panel slats, etc.
